The Global Polio Eradication Initiative annual report 2008 measures progress made towards the objectives defined in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative strategic plan 2004–2008. It also reports on intensified eradication initiatives.The report shows that while not all milestones were met, progress made in key political, technical, financial and operation areas led to the conclusion that the remaining challenges for polio eradication could be overcome.

This Annual report measures progress made in 2007 against milestones of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative strategic plan 2004–2008 as well as in the milestones set for the new intensified eradication effort. Aided by the development of new-generation tools and tactics, an intensified polio eradication effort was launched in 2007, sequentially targeting type 1 polio-virus (the most paralytic), then type 3. The report shows that by the end of 2007, type 1 polio was reduced by 81% – the sharpest ever drop in a single year.

This Annual report measures progress made in 2006 against milestones of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative strategic plan 2004–2008. The year 2006 began with confirmation that indigenous wild poliovirus transmission had been stopped in Egypt and Niger, reducing the number of endemic countries to four. In the remaining countries – Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan – this report documents how intensification of immunization campaigns succeeded in geographically restricting virus transmission by the end of 2006.

This report measures progress achieved in 2005 against the stated milestones of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative strategic plan 2004–2008.

The report describes how new monovalent oral polio vaccines (mOPVs) were developed with record speed and used for the first time in India and Egypt in 2005. It also shows how the epidemic of 2003–2005 was brought under control in most re-infected countries, with 14 out of 22 again stopping the disease.
