Building the next generation of polio eradication experts
A specialized international training programme is helping health professionals strengthen the knowledge and skills needed to finish polio eradication — and sustain a polio-free world.

The Polio Advanced Course in Vaccinology (PVAC) brings together health professionals and experts from different countries to deepen their understanding of polio vaccines, surveillance, outbreak response and the broader challenges of eradication.

Co-organized by the University of Geneva, Qatar University and Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, the five-day course combines expert presentations with practical exercises, case studies and discussions. Its aim is to strengthen technical expertise, encourage international collaboration and help develop the next generation of leaders in polio eradication.

The programme covers the full range of issues facing eradication efforts, from vaccine science and immunization strategies to community engagement, outbreak preparedness, policy and communication.

The 2026 English-language session took place in Doha, Qatar, from 25 to 29 October, with a French-language session scheduled in Dakar, Senegal, from 14 to 18 December.

As the world works to interrupt the remaining poliovirus transmission and prepare for a polio-free future, developing and maintaining this expertise will remain essential.
