Financing – GPEI
Financing

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is financed by a wide range of public and private donors, who help meet the costs of the Initiative’s eradication activities implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with countries and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Between 1988 and 2020, over US$20 billion has been provided by over 100 public and private sector donors.

Financial Needs

The financial needs of the GPEI represent the direct funding requirements for polio eradication activities to be implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in coordination with national governments.

The financial needs do not include estimations of costs incurred directly by national governments nor do they include the cost of IPV via Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

In order to ensure the GPEI’s funding requirements are fully financed until eradication and certification, an Investment Case was launched in April 2022 to accompany the strategic plan for 2022 until 2026.
