  • From Eradication Gains to Final Victory: African Ministers Pledge to End Polio Once and For All
    Gathering at the WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Lusaka, Zambia, health ministers reaffirmed their commitment to finish the job of polio eradication. Building on decades of progress that have spared millions of children from paralysis, leaders pledged renewed action to eliminate all forms of poliovirus and safeguard Africa’s historic gains.  More.

  • Afghanistan:  one WPV1 case
  • Pakistan:  six WPV1-positive environmental samples
  • Chad:  one cVDPV2 case and one cVDPV3 case
  • Germany:  one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample
  • Israel:  one cVDPV1-positive environmental sample
  • Yemen:  25 cVDPV2 cases

More information on the countries that have reported cases and/or environmental samples this week.

  • One WPV case was reported this week, with onset of paralysis on 10 July, from Farah. The number of cases in 2025 is now three. The number of cases for 2024 remains 25.
  • No WPV1-positive environmental samples were reported this week.

  • No WPV1 cases were reported this week.  The number of cases this year remains 21. The number of cases for 2024 remains 74.
  • Six WPV1-positive environmental samples were reported this week, from across the country.

  • One cVDPV2 case was reported this week, with onset of paralysis on 4 July, from Batha. The number of cases this year is 15. The number of cases from 2024 remains 39.
  • No cVDPV2-positive environmental samples were reported this week.
  • One cVDPV3 case was reported this week, with onset of paralysis on 20 June, from Chari Baguirmi.  It is the first cVDPV3 in the country this year and is linked to an isolate from a cVDPV3 AFP case in Ngaoundéré, Cameroon.

  • One cVDPV2-positive environmental sample was reported this week, collected on 28 July, from Rheinland-Pfalz. The number of positive samples for 2025 is 12. The number of positive samples for 2024 remains 25.

  • One cVDPV1-positive environmental sample was reported this week, collected on 9 July, from Center. The number of positive samples for 2025 is 10.

  • 25 cVDPV2 cases were reported this week.  23 of these cases are from 2024 and two are from Q1 2025.  This brings the number of cases for 2024 to 187 and 29 for 2025.
  • No cVDPV2-positive environmental samples were reported this week.
  • The recent increase in reported cases and environmental sample isolates from 2024 and 2025 is not particularly linked to an increase in poliovirus transmission, but rather to retrospective testing associated with recent release of previously-collected specimens from the country.
