Weekly country updates as of 19 February 2020

  • No case of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case was reported this week. The total number of WPV1 cases reported in 2019 remains 29.
  • Two positive environmental samples of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) were reported in Nangarhar province.

  • Five wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported this week: four in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and one in Balochistan province. This brings the number of cases in 2020 to 17 and 144 for 2019.
  • Six WPV1 positive environmental samples were reported: two in Sindh province, two in Punjab province and two in Balochistan province.

  • No case of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) was reported this week. There were 18 cVDPV2 cases reported in 2019.

  • DR Congo continues to be affected by several other genetically-distinct cVDPV2s (notably in Kasai,Kwilu, Kwango and Sankuru provinces).

  • Two cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) was reported this week from Ashanti province with one being the first 2020 case. The total number of cases reported in 2019 now stands at 13.
  • The risk of further cVDPV2 spread across West Africa remains high.

  • One case of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) was reported in Oromyiaprovince in Ethiopia making it the second case in 2020.
  • There are 13 cVDPV2 cases reported in Ethiopia so far, four cases are linked to the outbreak in neighbouring Somalia and eight cases are part of 3 different outbreaks in Ethiopian.
  • Somalia has reported a total of 15 cVDPV cases (eight type 2, six type 3 and one coinfection of both type 2 and type 3) since the beginning of the outbreak.

  • No circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) case was reported this week.  One cVDPV1 case was reported in 2018 from Papua province with onset of paralysis on 28 November 2018.
  • This outbreak is not linked to the cVDPV1 in neighbouring Papua New Guinea. 
  • No new WPV1-positive environmental samples were reported this week.  In total, three WPV1-positive environmental samples were reported in 2019, all from Sistan and Balochistan province.  The isolated viruses were detected in environmental samples only, and genetic sequencing confirms they are linked to WPV1 circulating in Karachi, Pakistan.
